February 29, 2024

Last Thursday, February 15th, 2024, the Washington West African Center (WAWAC), were invited to participate in the Art and Culture fair organized by Odyssey Elementary School in Everett WA.

We joined in to showcase diversity, alongside several other communities invited to share their culture and tradition. As usual, we were at the center of it all, representing West Africa.

Our table displaying traditional African musical instruments and other resources caught a lot of attention, were people had the opportunity to try traditional African musical instruments such as the Djembe, Balafon, Riti, Xalam, Kalimba and Kora

We conducted outreach by setting up banners, flyers, and making announcements about the Working Families Tax Credit, Women Infants and Children (WIC), Domestic Violence and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Services (VITA).

The WAWAC Bideww Choir entertained the audience with the “Hear Us Out” song on Domestic Violence, followed by four other performances in Hausa, Mandinka, Wolof and Sarahuleh.

We extend our gratitude to Odyssey Elementary School for the invitation and to our partners – the Washington State Department of Commerce, Working Families Tax Credit, Washington State Department of Health, Verdant Health Commission, and Inatai Foundation.
