Celebrating diversity,  WAWAC lights up Mukilteo Elementary Multicultural events with West African Culture.  On Thursday, February 8th, 2024, the Washington West African Center (WAWAC), were invited to participate in the multicultural event organized by Mukilteo Elementary school’s PTA. We joined in to showcase diversity, alongside several other communities invited to share their culture and tradition. As usual, we were at the center of it all, representing West Africa.

Our table displaying traditional African musical instruments and other resources caught a lot of attention, were people had the opportunity to try traditional African musical instruments such as the Djembe, Balafon, Riti, Xalam, Kalimba, Kora, as well as sharing refreshing home made juices such as  Wonjo and Ginger.

We conducted outreach by setting up banners, flyers, and making announcements about the Working Families Tax Credit, Women Infants and Children (WIC) and Domestic Violence.

The WAWAC Bideww Choir entertained the audience with the “Hear Us Out” song on Domestic Violence, followed by four other performances in Hausa, Mandinka, Wolof and Sarahuleh.

We extend our gratitude to Mukilteo Elementary School for the invitation and to our partners – the Washington State Department of Commerce, Working Families Tax Credit, Washington State Department of Health, Verdant Health Commission, and Inatai Foundation.
